Hydrogen in titanium-a risk factor.

Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used in the aircraft industry, space technology, shipbuilding, electronics, chemical and medical industries, metallurgy and other modern industries. The properties of metal and alloys based on it are largely determined by the content of impurities, so strict analytical control is required at all stages of production. The hydrogen content is especially critical – even in micro quantities (0.003%), this gas leads to a complete loss of plastic properties: the material becomes brittle and brittle. 

"Titan SL": the hydrogen content is under control! 

One of the most modern and accurate instruments for determining the concentration of hydrogen in titanium is the "Titan SL" spectrometer, which is widely used for rapid analysis of raw materials and control of technological parameters during the smelting process. Inside the compact (40x40x40 cm) monoblock are placed: 

  • Optical system for decomposing the signal into a spectrum (polychromator); 
  • High power spark generator; 
  • Recording system with the function of recording to a CCD. 

When a spark is generated, the electrons in the hydrogen and titanium atoms move to a higher energy level. The excited state is unstable, and after an infinitesimal period of time, the atoms return to their normal energy state, while the energy difference is released in the form of light quanta. The light transmitted through the optical cable is decomposed into a spectrum recorded by the CCD detectors. The received data is transmitted to an external computer, which processes the information and outputs the analysis result. 

"Titan SL": simple, fast, accurate;

To prepare the device for operation, only a few operations are required: connecting to the power grid, to a computer (via USB) and supplying an inert gas (argon). Due to the ease of measurement, it is possible to determine the hydrogen in titanium in just a few minutes. The nominal power consumption in the standby mode is 15 W, the maximum at the time of measurement is 60 W. All measurements are carried out automatically, the influence of the "human factor" during the analysis is practically excluded.
